Geography

Our Vision

At St George's Primary School, we want our children to be determined and confident when extending their knowledge and understanding of their local area and the wider world. This is underpinned by our school vision statement; '"Be determined and confident as God will be with you", inspiring us to learn, care and share, through work, play and prayer.'

A high-quality geography education inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination for the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through school, their growing knowledge of the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

Trips, visitors and themed days

St George’s Primary School aims to give all children skills and knowledge through meaningful real life experiences, including trips and visits from people. This gives our Geography teaching purpose and inspires children to be determined and confident in using their Geography related knowledge and skills outside of school.

In January 2023, the school had a ‘Great Explorers’ themed week which began with a real hot air balloon in the school hall. Throughout the week, classes learnt about explorers and their journeys, the places they visited and what life was like. Jacqui Hill Murphy, a real life explorer, came to speak to the children about her adventures and Hannah Whitby, an oceanographer, shared her experiences working at sea. These life experiences inspire and fascinate the children, creating wonder and curiosity.

Other experiences include walks into Chorley and local parks to conduct fieldwork and identify human and physical features, a trip to Lytham as part of the children's learning about coasts, a visit from Rivers Trust to install a trout tank, a walk to a river to consolidate learning in the classroom (and to release the trout), a workshop from United Utilities and a number of themed days related to topics.
