Welcome back everyone—I hope you had a great half term.

This week we have been hearing about all the delicious and sometimes quite unusual pancake toppings the children have enjoyed over the week! I must admit Leanne's pancake desserts to celebrate Shove Tuesday went down very well with the children and staff! As we have now finished our pancakes, our thoughts have turned to Lent as we encourage each other to give something up or to do something extra to keep the meaning of Lent alive. At school this year, we will be giving something for lent—not giving something up! Our Lent challenges are becoming a tradition at St George's and we are sure the children will enjoy giving to the community.

This year's Easter church service will be held on Tuesday 28th March. We hope to see you there! Details of the service and rehearsals are on the web cal.

On Tuesday 7th March 23, Author Tamsin Mori will be visiting St. George's to speak with the Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 children about her most recent book release and answer questions about the job that she loves so much.

The children can buy a signed copy of any of the three Weather Weavers' Adventure Series for £7.50 or all three in the series for £20. Please see ScoPay for details about the book ordering. Orders must be placed by Wednesday 1st March to guarantee the copy is signed by Tamsin.

Head Lice

We have had a couple of cases of head lice in school. Please keep an eye on your child's hair and treat the hair if you do see lice.

Water

Just a reminder that we ask that children only bring water to drink in school. We are seeing a few Prime energy drink bottles in school. These may have been filled with water, which is absolutely fine but we ask that the energy drink isn't brought into school.

Parking

We are completely aware that parking is not always the easiest around school at busy parts of the day. However, over recent weeks, we have had reports from parents of a couple of near misses with unsafe parking and driving. We ask that when parking at drop off and pick up, you drive very carefully and bear in mind that there are very young children near the roads. I'm sure that we will all agree that we don't want any accidents.

Parents Evening

Parents Evenings will be held on 22nd and 23rd March. We noticed at the last parents evening that most parents were choosing face to face appointments. We have therefore decided to do both evenings face to face in school. If a zoom appointment is more convenient for you, you are welcome to book an appointment as normal and let your child's teacher know you would like to use zoom. They will be happy to arrange this for you. Appointments can be booked via Scopay and will be available from 11am on Monday 13th March. On the evenings, please enter school via the main entrance.

School Council Pyjama Day and Movie Night

School council love raising money for the school and deciding how this could be spent. We have therefore been busy planning an Easter Pyjama Day and Movie night which we know is a firm favourite with the children whilst raising money for the school too. This year, on Wednesday 29th March 2023, all children are invited to come to school in their pyjamas. Children will also be able to stay in their classrooms after school to watch a movie with their class whilst school council will hand out a drink and small bag of popcorn per child. If your child wishes to stay for movie night after school, please sign up and pay £2 on Scopay ( £1 for Pyjama Day and £1 for Movie night). If your child does not wish to stay after school, £1 could be brought into school to donate for Pyjama Day. Children staying for Movie Night should be collected at 5:30pm from the same place you would normally collect them at the end of the school day.

Many thanks,

School Council

Mastery Maths- A Parent’s Guide

After looking at the responses to our parent questionnaire, we wanted to ensure that parents have a clear view on how we teach maths in school, particularly the term ‘Mastery.’

Mastery is the belief that each objective of the year group curriculum should not just be taught, but children should gain a deep understanding. This means that they can generalise that skill across different contexts. A maths example would be being able to use addition across real life contexts such as measures.

This approach is at the heart of the maths curriculum at St. Georges and we give each topic ample time to explore, question, explain and look at variations in questions and use different contexts.

The National Curriculum 2014 aims to ensure that all pupils:

· become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

· reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

· can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

To ensure we have the best beginning possible to plan creative lessons, we use a scheme of work called ‘Maths No Problem’ from Y1 onwards. In Early Years we also use the mastery approach, utilising materials from White Rose Maths.

If you would like to find out more about the Maths No Problem scheme, and what it looks like in practise, follow the link below https://mathsnoproblem.com/en/resources/maths-mastery-guide/

We aspire for all children in St George’s to be confident, determined learners and have seen first-hand the benefits of the mastery approach. If you have any questions, please have a look at the maths page on the school website or email our Maths Subject Lead e.smith@st-georges.lancs.sch.uk.

Seesaw Platform and APP | Ark Swift Primary Academy

You may have noticed that the Seesaw App has changed and is now available as one mobile app for iOS or Android devices for students, and family. You no longer need to use two separate Seesaw Class and Seesaw Family apps. This single Seesaw app allows, students and families to switch easily between active users.

Do I have to do anything to get the new app?

New Seesaw users: If you're new to Seesaw, install Seesaw on iOS or Android devices and sign in as a student, or family.

Current Seesaw Class app users: If you already have the Seesaw Class app, no need to get another app! You will be updated to the new Seesaw app automatically.

Seesaw Family app users: if you have an earlier version of the Seesaw Family app (before 8.0.0) you will need to download the new Seesaw app to take advantage of the new experience.  Once you using the new app, you can delete the Seesaw Family app.

In the Seesaw app, you can now add different accounts for both students and family members.  Once added, it is easy to switch between the different accounts. That means that if you are a parent with two children, you can sign into your family account and both of your student accounts on the same device. Please note, however, that if your children have access to your device, they will also be able to access your family account from the switching menu. You may prefer, for example, to keep your adult/family account on your phone, and use a shared device/tablet for children’s accounts.  If you have more than one child’s account on your device, please ensure that they are uploading work and completing activities for their own account, and not that of their siblings!
