COVID update

As we have done throughout the pandemic, we have updated what we do in school to be in line with government and local guidance. Children will no longer be temperature checked as they enter school and the chalet will no longer be an isolation area for children with symptoms. If children or staff do have symptoms we ask, please, that they do continue to take a lateral flow test and if they test positive that they stay at home until they test negative two days in a row (after day 5) or they have isolated for 10 days. We also ask that if there is COVID in the household, the children have daily lateral flow tests until the household is COVID clear. We understand that this is no longer the law and something we cannot insist on but we do ask, if you can, that you help us try and keep cases out of school so that we can keep staff in school, classes open and protect our more vulnerable in society. We also understand that this will become harder as lateral flow testing is fazed out and that this is, as it has always been, a fluid and changeable situation.

It feels very much as we are slowly returning to pre-COVID times, which for some of us will feel long overdue but for others is an anxious moment. We ask that you are considerate of the feelings of others and should you wish to continue to wear a mask on school grounds and socially distance, please feel free to do so.

The relaxation in restrictions does mean that we can go back to functioning as a whole school again, working freely between classes and the return of whole school worships in the hall.

MUGA worships have been absolutely great, it has been really nice to worship surrounded by the beauty of God's natural world but whole school worships in the hall are something that have been sorely missed by many in school. They can be more atmospheric and generate a real feeling of community and belonging. However, they are also likely to be less eventful than MUGA worships as we will no longer have the joy of an occasional downpour/hail stone shower while singing our hymns... Going forward we will go for a hybrid system of indoor and outdoor worships weather and topic dependant.

Staffing Updates

It has been a long time coming, but at long last Rachel Smith, our class 3 teacher, will be returning from maternity leave after the Easter holidays.  Rachel is returning to school as a full time class teacher, and will return to teaching class 3. Rachel will return the week before we break up for Easter as part of her handover, before resuming her teaching commitment after the holidays. It will be great to have Rachel back, but before she returns I want to thank Anne Fothergill and Karen Barclay for doing such a stunning job while Rachel has been away - twice! Karen and Anne willingly covered Rachel's 1st maternity..... the 2nd maternity, whilst it came as a bit of a shock to them, I must say, was covered equally enthusiastically. Karen and Anne are tremendous team players, and will continue to work with Rachel after the Easter break. Indeed, Anne is in the class Tuesday and Thursday mornings to ease Rachel back in.

As we welcome Rachel back to school, we actually begin to say a  fond farewell to Miss Darlington who will sadly be leaving us at Easter for pastures new. Louise has secured a new position at Ince CE Primary School in Wigan. We wish Louise all the best in her new position, and thank her most earnestly for her dedication to St George's over the last 12 years. Louise is a great teacher, and a massive character. She will be missed by many. All the best Louise, and I'll see you at the DW!

After Easter, reception class will continue to be taught by Siobhan Horder, Jill Hession, Carol Fairhurst. In addition, Karen Barclay, who return to school working mornings only as a class teacher will join the reception team in the mornings and our AHT, Nicola Cook will work with reception in the afternoons. This will provide a seamless transition and consistency for our youngest pupils as they continue to work adults who are familiar to them for the remainder of the year.

Congratulations are in order for Georgina Berry and her partner James as they prepare to welcome a new addition to the family. Georgina is due to have her baby in August and is aiming to work with her year 6 class until the end of the year.

Our school CBT therapist, Emma Rixon, has informed us today that sadly she is unable to carry on working with school and has left with immediate effect, accordingly, it is regrettable, that the parents meetings that have just been organised won't be going ahead.  As part of our whole school mental health action plan, we were planning to change mental health providers at the start of next term. We were hoping that Emma would stay with us until the change over, but, alas, that isn't to be. Michelle, one of our AHT's, is a qualified and practising Thrive Programme Coach and has her own business which has previously always been separate to her role in school and outside of school hours. More information will follow in the coming weeks about how Michelle will support individual children and their families as part of her role in school and how we will use The Thrive Programme resources to develop a whole school approach to mental health. In a nutshell, The Thrive Programme is an exciting and empowering education programme that teaches adults and young people how to take control of their mental health and learn to make the best of their life. https://www.thriveprogramme.org/childrens-problems/. Whilst this link takes you to The Thrive Programme website, Michelle will be tailoring the programme to meet the needs of our children at school, and of course, the support that Michelle gives the dis in school will be free of charge to yourselves. It is worth noting at this point that despite the immense benefits of the Thrive Programme due to a potential conflict of interest Michelle is unable to work with families outside of school hours. She can of course, should you wish, sign post to other coaches.

If your child has been working with Emma Rixon, Michelle will be in touch in the coming days about the way forward.

And in minor staffing news, Andy will complete his final week working full time at Mossy Lea, before returning to his role as Head of both schools from Monday 7th March. Due to the changes that are pending at St George's, the way we will cover at Mossy will also change, as we have reduced SLT capacity. Next week at Mossy a supply teacher will join the team, team teaching with Andy, before he hands over at the end of the week. It will be nice to have him back.

Friends,

This morning Fr Peter helped us to think about the story of the healing of a blind man.

Here is Fr Peter’s reflection: https://stgeorgechorley.co.uk/news/news_inner/169

Here is the notice sheet: https://stgeorgechorley.co.uk/brochure/theway.pdf

Lent begins on Wednesday! Why not read through John’s Gospel with us with the help of the Diocesan Devotional which you can get here: https://stgeorgechorley.co.uk/news/news_inner/167

On Ash Wednesday there are two services where you can be ‘ashed’ as we begin journeying through Lent. Come to whichever works best for you: 10am at St George’s, or 7.30pm at St Peter’s.

God bless,

Fr Mike

MORE FROM MIKE

CHRISTIANITY EXPLORED - is an informal and relaxed six-week course. It's for anyone who wants to think about the meaning of life, and it is completely free. You don't need to know anything about the Bible and you won't be asked to pray or sing. You can ask any question you like or you can just sit and listen. It’s for those who don’t know anything about Christianity, or those who want a refresher on the basics. Begins: 7.30pm on Wed. 20th April. For info speak to Fr Mike (vicar@stgeorgechorley.co.uk)

Some children will be very aware of the events in the Ukraine or may be asking questions that you are finding difficult to answer. There are a couple of links below that may be helpful to you in supporting children during this time.

A gentle reminder that flexible starts and ends to the school day are sadly no longer feasible. School doors open at 8:45 with all children entering via the promenade doors and being in school by 8:55am.  If your child is later than 8:55 they must come in through the school office and sign in using the screen by the front desk.

Also a polite request that parents do not use the staff car park when dropping children off for breakfast club. This is mainly for the safety of the children. Our car park is busy at the best of times but especially before the start of the school day when staff are arriving for work. Please use the lay-by when dropping your child off in breakfast club.

Young Voices

As you are aware we have been given a new date for the Young Voices concert, this is due to take place on Wednesday 25th May.

We understand that some people may not be able to attend this date, and we have now received information for us to be able to begin the process of issuing refunds. Please message us if you are unable to attend or if you would like to request a refund.

World Book Day

We will be holding our St George's World Book Day on Friday. Unfortunately the author we have booked is unable to attend due to ill health. However, we still have lots of fun and engaging activities for the children to take part in. If your child would like to dress up as their favourite storybook character on this day then they may do so. As always fancy dress is optional.

Year 1 Worship

Parents of children in year 1 (both in class 3 and class 4) are invited to school on Thursday 10th March at 9:00 to watch their child's class worship. Please drop your child off as usual and make your way round to the hall door where you will be able to enter and take a seat. The worship is approximately 20 minutes long.
