Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Friday the 17th of January, and it feels like we’re already hitting our stride for 2025. The holidays may be behind us, but there’s still a sense of renewal and energy in the air as we settle into the new term. This week, we’re absolutely thrilled to welcome back Martin, our fantastic site manager, after his prolonged illness. It’s so good to have you back, Martin—you’ve been missed more than words can say. And a huge thank you to Gina, who stepped in and held the fort. She did her best, and we’re truly grateful for her support. But let’s face it, Martin—no one quite does it like you!

As we look forward, I’m reminded of a quote from Rocky Balboa (because every good newsletter needs a movie moment!): “It’s not about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” It’s a perfect mantra for January as we tackle challenges head-on, together as a school community, supporting one another every step of the way.

And for a pause for thought: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour” (Ecclesiastes 4:9). Whether it’s the teamwork of staff, parents, or children, it’s this collective effort that makes St. George’s such a decent place to learn care and share - whether child or adult. Let’s keep working together, lifting each other up, and making this term another phenomenal chapter in our school’s story.

Here’s to a brilliant week ahead—supportive, productive, and uniquely St. George’s! 💪✨

Be proud of what we have folks - enhance it, defend it, enjoy it, appreciate it. Not everyone has it.

This week’s Yes, No, or Middle Niggle question is:

“I believe that St. George’s is a place where every voice is valued and respected—do you agree?”

As always, your honest feedback is useful. Whether it’s a resounding yes, a thoughtful middle niggle, or a no with suggestions, I’m here to listen, learn, and work with you to keep building the positive, inclusive environment we all strive for. Let’s keep the conversation going—grab a coffee (cortado is still my favourite!) and share your thoughts!

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week (3rd - 9th February 2025), St George’s will be taking part in the ‘Wear Your SCARF Day’ on 7th February 2025. This is a day organised by Coram Life Education which celebrates the SCARF values that promote children’s health and wellbeing – Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship.

On this special day, we are inviting all children to come into school wearing a scarf as a symbol of support for children’s wellbeing. During the day, children will be taking part in a range of activities and thinking about what their scarf means to them.

This half term, one of the key messages we’re focusing on is beautifully captured in the phrase on this poster: “Listen to understand, not to respond.” It’s a reminder of the power of active listening—not just hearing words, but truly taking the time to understand the feelings, perspectives, and needs behind them.

In our busy lives, it’s easy to rush conversations, already forming our next response before we’ve fully absorbed what’s been said. But when we pause, listen deeply, and approach others with empathy, we create stronger connections, resolve misunderstandings, and foster a sense of trust and respect. This is a crucial skill for our children to develop, and as adults, it’s one we can model for them every day.

At St. George’s, we want our school community—staff, children, and parents alike—to be a place where every voice is valued, every feeling is acknowledged, and every conversation builds understanding. Let’s all embrace this mindset and encourage our children to do the same, making our school a space of kindness, respect, and thoughtful communication.
