Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

“To see the world…”

There’s a line from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty that’s always stuck with me:

“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”

It’s been echoing in my mind this week — not because any of us are scaling mountains or diving into volcanoes (although the Saturday at PGL was as painful!), but because schools are, in their own way, miniature versions of that same adventure. A thousand small stories unfolding — children growing in confidence, friendships deepening, courage being quietly built lesson by lesson, playtime by playtime.

And in the background, we — the grown-ups — keep steady. We adjust the sails. We respond to the unexpected. We guide gently, patiently. And sometimes, like Walter Mitty, we learn that the most extraordinary adventures don’t always look like adventures at all.

In the playground. In the lunch hall. In a child finally putting their hand up. In the moment someone says sorry. In letting go at the gates and trusting what’s to come.

It’s not always loud. But it matters.

So this week, thank you — for being part of it.

Let’s keep showing up. Keep drawing closer. And, as Coldplay once put it, keep living the adventure of a lifetime.

We’ve had an absolutely fantastic time at the PGL residential! The benefits of this experience are endless—building confidence, teamwork, and resilience, all while having tons of fun. The kids were simply amazing, tackling every challenge with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. A huge shout-out to the staff for their unwavering support and energy, and to the incredible PGL team who made the experience unforgettable. I’ve set up a gallery on our website so you can relive some of these magical moments.

Young Voices Sign Up Form 2026

I am pleased to confirm that once again, St. George’s will be attending Young Voices this academic year, with the concert due to take place on Friday 13th February, 2026 at the Manchester CO Op Arena (more details will follow).

We will be running the choir after school club every Monday from 3:15pm – 4:15pm, beginning on Monday 6th October 2025. The choir is open to children in Years 4, 5 and 6. If your child would like to participate, please fill out the questions below. Submit your answers over the weekend and certainly by 9.00am on Monday 29th September 2025. I will confirm places by the end of Monday 29th September.

Please note, places are limited and completing the form does not automatically guarantee a place on the choir. We will work on a first come basis whilst also considering previous years’ participation in the choir.

Please scan the code above or click on this link

We ask that if your child does have a place, they are committed to coming every week and are able to attend the concert – we also require informing of absence if they are unable to make the rehearsal. If your child for some reason is unable to attend, please simply inform Sharon on the school phone line (I really appreciate your help with this).

More information can be found from the website.

Muddy Monday – Monday 30th September
As part of our continuing work on the school grounds, we're inviting all children to take part in Muddy Monday on 30th September — a whole-school effort to help prepare our outdoor spaces for the colder months ahead. It’s a practical, purposeful day… and we’d love your support!

All children are encouraged to come dressed in old, weatherproof clothes (scruffs welcome!) and to bring along field kits if they have them — including gloves, trowels, small spades or buckets. Wheelbarrows and adult help are also very welcome! We’ll be clearing, planting, lifting, digging and getting properly mucky — so please dress for the elements.

Events like this are a brilliant reminder of how much we can achieve together, and how much pride the children take in their school environment. Thank you, in advance, for your support — we can’t wait to get stuck in.

Parents more than welcome to join and help!

School admissions now open

If your child is in their last year of pre-school/nursery you can now apply for their primary school place at: www.lancashire.gov.uk/schools

It's quick and easy to do and you will receive email confirmation of your application.

You must apply even if you already have siblings in school. If you live in Lancashire you can include out of area preferences on your online application.

The closing date for primary applications for next September is 23:59 on 15 January 2026.

Please also see the admissions page from the school website for additional details.

A Note on Attendance and Leave Requests
As you may be aware, there have been national changes to how schools handle unauthorised absences. These changes — which have been in effect for 12 months now — reduce our ability to use discretion when it comes to authorising time off. We’ll always share the latest guidance, and you’ll find a summary of the new rules included in this newsletter.

That said, I want to reassure you: my door is always open. I’ll always try to work with you, not against you. I’d much rather have honest conversations than awkward stand-offs. We ask, please, that you don’t ask children to cover for adult decisions — it puts them in an uncomfortable position and teaches them the wrong lesson about truth and trust. If something’s going on, just let us know. We’ll do our best to listen, support and advise.

Above all, please keep attendance as high as possible, and remember to call in if your child is absent. Every day in school really does matter — and together, we’re giving them the best chance to thrive.

My thanks, as always,
Andy

As we wrap up this week, here’s something to ponder:

Be brave.
Let the magic of confidence enter you quietly, and strengthen you.
Trust your grown-ups. Trust yourself.
And remember — you’re not being pushed forward. You’re stepping up.

To all our children:
Keep wondering. Keep trying. Keep going.

And to our parents — thank you, always, for walking this road with us.

See you next week.
