St George’s is now in a period of interregnum, as we await the Diocese’s appointment of a new vicar to lead our parish forward.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we step gently into the final weeks of term, there’s a sense that the landscape around school is shifting — not just with the golden leaves giving way to winter’s hush, but with the quiet energy of anticipation. Much like an Advent calendar, these next few weeks are dotted with moments of joy, effort, reflection, and preparation — little windows into what makes our school such a unique community.

Whether it's rehearsing for the KS2 production, preparing for, and executing parents' evening, or digging out muddy wellies for our rescheduled Muddy Monday day, each small moment is part of a bigger picture — one of connection, contribution, and care. We are, in many ways, building something — not just physically in the form of our new Alpine Chapel, but metaphorically too: a school that grows stronger when we rally, when we give, and when we believe in each other.

Let’s carry that spirit through to Christmas — not chasing perfection, but nurturing purpose. As Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Apropos the Alpine Chapel…

Let’s rewind. Some time ago, we submitted a bid to improve our wraparound provision—and to our delight, it was successful. But as with many things lately, costs spiralled. For a while, it looked like the project might stall entirely, which would have meant returning the £64,000 grant—frankly, a daft outcome.

I know it sometimes feels like we’re always talking about money—but this really is a transformational project, and we’re deeply grateful for everyone helping to make it a reality.  I’m actually not naturally comfortable asking for big donations—but thankfully, others have stepped in. Thanks to an incredible blend of support—a private donation from Shackerley, £5,000 from our PTFA, church support, and a grant from the Diocese—we can now go ahead.

The Alpine Chapel, a decent wooden chalet, will house additional places in our wraparound care, act as a meeting and training room, and offer a dedicated space for RE and spiritual reflection. Once discussions are held with our new vicar (once appointed), I hope we’ll also be able to hold services there—a true chapelette in every sense.

It’s still early days—but this will be a meaningful addition to the school’s heartbeat. That said, we’ll need to furnish it… so if you happen to know any secret pots of money or generous benefactors, do get in touch.

🌿 Muddy Monday is Back! – Monday 15th December, 1:00–3:00pm

We've rescheduled our much-loved Muddy Monday to Monday 15th December in the afternoon—and we’re going big!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • 🧥 Children should come into school in Forest School kit (waterproofs, wellies, warm layers, scruffs).

  • 🛠️ Named trowels or small gardening tools are welcome—please send these in if you can.

  • 🌳 Mr Mellor will be joining us to lead our winter garden prep. Kids will be helping to dig, mulch, plant bulbs, and tidy the grounds.

  • 🧤 Gloves would be useful for those with sensitive hands.

  • 👨‍🌾 Parents, carers and grandparents are warmly invited to join us! If you'd like to volunteer, please email Mrs Smith at: e.smith@st-georges.lancs.sch.uk.

  • ☕ There will be a warm brew waiting for helpers at the end!

We were caught slightly on the back foot with our last attempt, but we're ready now—wellies on, sleeves up, and ready to winterise the grounds with gusto.

As Advent continues, and a whisper of Christmas weaves its way through the classrooms, thank you—as always—for travelling the road with us. It’s been a term of teamwork, patience, and pulling together, and we don't take your support for granted. From Parents Evening conversations to muddy trowels and wintery forest school plans, every step you take with us strengthens the thread that binds this community.

So, as the nights grow longer, may your homes grow warmer. And may kindness—not perfection—be our shared aim.

Something to ponder:
"You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Have a magical week ahead, Andy
