St George’s is now in a period of interregnum, as we await the Diocese’s appointment of a new vicar to lead our parish forward.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Stepping straight into the heart of this week, my gratitude is overflowing after Monday's Christmas Fair. In spite of the downpour ), our PTFA pulled off something quite magnificent. Their sheer graft, their buoyant spirits, and their refusal to let the weather get the mulligrubs were, quite frankly, inspirational.

And to you — our parents, grandparents, carers, and assorted festive renegades — thank you. The atmosphere you created was warm, joyful, and brobdingnagian in generosity. You showed, yet again, that when St George’s leans in together, a damp day can still shimmer. In the words of Matthew 5:14, you really were “the light of the world” as you bustled from stall to stall, supporting the school and each other with a kindness that never feels iniquitous or performative — just wonderfully you.

What a cracking start to Advent. Onwards.

...... and from the PTFA,

What a great evening! Despite last minute changes due to the weather, we still raised £3,500 tonight, towards the new wrap round care building.

Thank you everyone for your support.

Thanks,

The PTFA

✨ New Clubs for the New Year!
We’re thrilled to launch two brilliant after-school clubs to kick off 2026 with a splash of fun, flavour and fitness!

  • Story Sport is back! SOme of you with children long left us,  will remember this fantastic club from years ago—before its founder Scot left to pursue new adventures. Now it’s back where it belongs—at St George’s! Story Sport blends physical activity with imagination, using storytelling and multi-skill games to develop kids’ confidence, coordination and creativity. It’s open to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 and runs every Wednesday morning, starting 7th January, for 6 weeks. Book via Scopay.

  • Cook Stars is a brand-new cooking club running after school, right here at St George’s. Although the booking link shows Mossy Lea (for admin reasons), all sessions are held at St George’s. Kids will get stuck into hands-on cooking, learning real recipes, measuring, mixing and creating something delicious each week to take home. It’s a fabulous way to develop life skills—with a sprinkle of fun! Booking details are on the flyer.

Both clubs are a brilliant way to bring in the New Year with something fresh, engaging and skill-building. Let’s cook up a storm and get moving!

As we approach the end of term, we want to continue the tradition of receiving thanks, but no presents from you! Your kind words, whether spoken or sent in an email, mean the world to us and are truly the best gifts we could receive. We know everyone is busy, and times are tight. If you feel strongly about giving, perhaps consider donating to a charity instead. Your support, kindness, and partnership are more than enough, and we are incredibly grateful to be part of this wonderful community. Thank you!

As we approach the end of term, we kindly ask that all outstanding debts, especially for wrap-around care, are settled. We do our best to make payment as simple as possible, but these funds are crucial for covering staff wages and ensuring the smooth running of our services. To continue using wrap-around care next term, all debts must be cleared before the end of this term. Your prompt attention to this is greatly appreciated, and thank you for your continued support and cooperation!

And, if I may quietly and humbly share something personal, I’ve recently been appointed an Honorary Lay Canon of Blackburn Cathedral, with the formal installation taking place in March. Before I say anything else, it may be worth speaking first about my journey of faith which may offer reassurance to others, perhaps? My faith has never been neat, linear, or particularly saintly. It has zig-zagged, paused, stumbled, restarted, and, at times, felt like trying to navigate with a compass that had ideas of its own. Yet, even in the most turbid seasons, there has always been a quiet pull towards service, community, and that gentle nudge that says, “Keep going.”

But there was a moment when that compass stopped completely. When Sue died eight years ago, my faith didn’t just dip — it emptied. It wasn’t anger; it was absence. A silence so large it swallowed the things I thought I knew. And for a long time, I didn’t try to rebuild it. I couldn’t.

Slowly — almost imperceptibly — faith returned. Not in trumpets or revelation, but in the compassion of others, the steady rhythm of school life, and the simple, grounding acts of kindness that arrive when you need them most. What grew back wasn’t the same structure I’d had before; it was gentler, humbler, more honest. A faith shaped by loss, patched together by grace, and anchored by the belief that hope still matters.

That’s why this canonship feels profoundly humbling and quietly uplifting. It marks a sort of full circle — not a triumphant one, but a tender, faithful one. My late dad and Sue — who many of our families won’t have known — shaped the person I try, falteringly, to be, and pride will be oozing from them upon this news.  Their influence sits behind every decision, every act of service, and every attempt to lead with compassion rather than arrogant certainty.

This honour isn’t really mine alone. It reflects the heartbeat of our community, the staff who graft daily, and the kids who bring light even on the rainiest of days. As Psalm 37:23 puts it, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him.” My steps have rarely been firm — more like determined ambling — but they’ve always been guided.

And for that, I’m quietly grateful.

Christmas dinner is on Christmas Party day, which is the 17th December. Book as normal on SCOpay before WEDNESDAY 10th so Leanne can order food in. The order system will close on SCOpay at 6pm on WEDNESDAY 10th DECEMBER.

This week we were delighted to support Rachel Rongong, Headteacher of St Michael’s, as she set off on her beautiful Advent run—‘A Christmas Journey’—connecting our Church of England schools in hope, not haste. Alongside this, we received the most heartfelt blessing from our friends at St Paul’s. Their words reminded us that community is not built through division, but through togetherness, kindness, and grace. In a world too often quick to point fingers, this Advent we choose to stretch out our arms instead. “So encourage one another and build each other up.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

I joined Rachel on the run to All Saints, where we read out our blessing to them.

A Blessing from St George’s to All Saints’
As you run your leg of this beautiful Advent journey, may the path ahead be gentle underfoot, and may each stride be filled with joy, hope, and peace. Though our buildings may stand apart, our hearts and prayers are knitted closely together.

“Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16

May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He show you His face and have mercy upon you.

From every child, parent, and member of staff at St George’s, we send warmth, faith, and encouragement to our neighbours at All Saints’. Keep running with purpose and love. We’re cheering you on, every step of the way.

Advent is not just a countdown—it’s a calling. And we are answering it, one step at a time.

Quick-Fire Notes for the Week

  • Muddy Monday – 15th December
Forest School is going full throttle! Kids will need Forest School clothes, and if possible, please send in spades, trowels and wheelbarrows (child-sized or adult — we won’t be picky).
Parent helpers would be a godsend; if you can join us, please email e.smith@st-georges.lancs.sch.uk.

A heartfelt thank you
Your support at the Christmas Fair genuinely makes a difference — don’t think it doesn’t. The warmth, generosity, and presence of our families are what turn these events from “good” to “magnificent”.
Huge thanks also to all our local businesses for their astonishing generosity with donations. We are blessed.

  • Christmas Productions – Please check the diary
The dates for all performances are clearly listed on the website calendar.
    Junior Production (in church):
    – Rehearsals: All set out in the calendar
    – Performance: 16th December, in church, 7pm starts (last about 1hour)
We expect all Junior children to attend the evening performance — they are the choir, the heart, and the atmosphere. Please ensure they are there, in full school uniform, ready to shine.

It's worth refreshing your memory of the diary unto Christmas, it gets a bit busy and bitty!

As we wrap up this week, here’s something to ponder:

Drawing things to a close, there’s a quiet joy settling over school as Advent unspools its gentle rhythm. These weeks are always a beautiful paradox — frenetic nativity rehearsals, turbid timetables, glitter in mumpsimuse-inducing places — yet beneath it all lies that quintessential message of hope. As Ted Lasso reminds us, “I believe in hope. I believe in BELIEVE.” And so do our kids, every time they step into the hall with wide-eyed wonder.

Thank you once again for the warmth, goodwill, and downright graft you’ve poured into the Christmas Fair and into school life more generally. Your support is not merely appreciated; it’s the inalienable foundation that keeps this place humming with life. As we push towards the final fortnight, may we do so with a bit of zhuzh, a dash of calm, and the steadfast assurance of Isaiah 40:31 — “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”

Have a lovely weekend, Andy
