Church life & parish updates

For information about worship, services, events, and church life, please search either parish below:

  • St George’s, Chorley

  • All Saints, Chorley

  • Fr Jordan Bentliffe

St George’s remains in a period of interregnum, as we continue to await the  Church Reps appointment of a new vicar to lead the parish forward. During this time, worship and parish life continue with the support of the wider ministry team and our friends at All Saints.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

There’s a moment in Ted Lasso, which remains my favourite TV programme by far, where he says, “Be curious, not judgemental.” It sounds simple,  almost throwaway, but the more you sit with it, the more it lingers.

Because life gets busy. People get tired. Things don’t always go to plan. And it’s very easy, in those moments, to jump to conclusions, to get frustrated, or to see things only from our own side.

But curiosity changes things.

It slows us down.
It helps us understand.
It reminds us there’s often more going on beneath the surface than we first realise.

As we head into the long weekend, perhaps that’s something worth carrying with us; a little more patience, a little more curiosity, a little more space for one another.

Because most of the time… we’re not seeing the whole story.

Quick Read - The Tip of the Iceberg

Tip of the Iceberg

A few important things just beneath the surface this week:

Election Day
School will remain open as normal, with all appropriate safety measures in place. Thank you for your support in helping the day run smoothly. Bi more information for new families down below.....

Staffing Update – Class 7
As Katy begins to prepare for her maternity leave, we are carefully planning a smooth and well-managed transition. We have been fortunate to have Jenny and Mark team teaching, and moving forward, Jenny (an experienced Year 5 teacher) will take the class through to the end of term.
Katy plans to begin maternity leave shortly after the half term break. In the final week of this term, Jenny will work alongside Katy to complete a full handover, while I will support by backfilling Jenny’s timetable where needed.
Change can feel unsettling, but this is planned, predictable, and carefully managed, not reactive. Katy will also ensure that reports and assessments are completed accurately, ready for Jenny to review if needed.
We wish Katy all the very best as she begins this exciting new chapter.

I will be supporting Mark in class 7 by a reorganisation of support staff, and increasing the supply teacher's hours who is covering Anne Fothergill.  You may, or indeed may not have realised Anne is currently absent. Being a medic, I've declared she has long COVID - she's certainly struggling, and in the words of The Beautiful South, needs a little time..... we wish her well.

Year 6 – London Trip
At this stage, the London trip is looking unlikely, as we were not successful in the initial application round. We have not completely given up hope, but we want to be honest with families that it is becoming less likely.

The Chapel
The Chapel continues to take shape and is looking fantastic. I remain hugely grateful to everyone who has contributed to making this happen.
It will, of course, play a key role in wraparound provision, but we are also beginning to shape a wider vision for how this space can be used across school life. It’s an exciting development — one we’ll continue to share as plans evolve.
For now… let’s enjoy it, and see where it takes us.

Be curious, not judgemental — there’s always more going on beneath the surface.

It's polling day on Thursday 7th May, however it's only local elections, so school is open as normal, as voting isn't as busy.

Voting will take place in Katy Blackledges' classroom, off the infant yard. Morning entry, and dismissal will take place as normal, with more staff being out - and extra vigilant. We will organise break and lunch times separately, and internally, so that all children have break and lunch on the other side of the school, on the Junior playground. Hope this makes sense, and is agreeable. Any questions, please, as always, get in touch.

Spelling help!

Spelling plays a vital role in children’s reading, writing and overall confidence, and as a school we are continuing to boost its profile. We would like to remind parents about Spelling Shed, which is an excellent online tool to support spelling practice at home. Each week, class teachers upload the children’s spellings to Spelling Shed, where pupils can practise them through fun, game-based activities. We recommend that children complete at least three games each week. To celebrate effort and success, the top three children on Spelling Shed will receive a certificate in worship each week, alongside a certificate for the highest scoring class. Please encourage your child to make regular use of this valuable resource.

Alongside Spelling Shed, we also use ‘sticky word’ strategies from our Red Rose Spelling scheme to help children remember spelling rules and conventions. These strategies are taught regularly in school and should be familiar to the children. They are also very effective for home practice.

· Sticky Note Spelling

· Colourful Words

· Triangle Words

· Read, Turn, Write, Check

Please find attached a more detailed explanation of how each strategy works.

Thank you for your continued support in helping your child develop strong spelling skills.

As we wrap up this week, here’s something to ponder:

As we move through the weeks ahead, it’s worth acknowledging that change is part of school life. Sometimes it’s small and barely noticeable. At other times, it’s more visible, staffing adjustments, plans shifting, new spaces taking shape.

Change can feel unsettling. That’s human.

But the important thing is this: when change is thought through, planned carefully, and centred on the children, it becomes something positive. Something that strengthens, rather than disrupts.

That’s always the aim here.

We don’t like to react, al;though of course we have to at times. We prepare. We think ahead. We work together.

And when we do that well, change doesn’t feel like something happening to us,  it becomes something we move through together.

Thank you, as always, for the trust, the support, and the partnership.

Because in the end, it’s not the change that defines us,

it’s how we handle it.

Have a great long weekend,

Andy
