St George’s remains in a period of interregnum, as we continue to await the  Church Reps appointment of a new vicar to lead the parish forward. During this time, worship and parish life continue with the support of the wider ministry team and our friends at All Saints.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

A university professor once asked his students a simple question.

"How heavy is a glass of water?"

The answers varied. Eight ounces. Twelve ounces. A pound.

The professor smiled and said:

"The actual weight doesn't matter. What matters is how long you hold it."

Hold it for a minute and it's no problem.

Hold it for an hour and your arm begins to ache.

Hold it for a day and eventually it becomes unbearable.

The weight never changed.

But the longer you carry it, the heavier it feels.

I've thought about that story a few times this week.

The final weeks of the school year can feel a little like that. There are more trips, productions, reports, assessments, sports events, transition days, leavers' celebrations and approximately 17,000 emails. Parents feel it. Staff feel it. Kids feel it too.

And yet, there is something rather wonderful about this time of year.

The things we're carrying aren't burdens.

They're memories in the making.

The sports day we'll laugh about in September.
The residential trip that gets mentioned for years.
The friendship that deepens.
The confidence that quietly grows.

So if things feel a little busy at the moment, that's probably because life is happening.

And that's not always a bad thing.

Staffing Update for September

As we move towards the end of the academic year, I wanted to share our staffing plans for September. There are some changes, but I want to say clearly from the outset: St George’s remains strong - very strong. There will be familiar faces, some new faces, and a good balance of continuity, freshness and experience.

Firstly, Si Ball will be leaving us at the end of the year. Si has been looking for a new challenge, and an opportunity has come up at Moor Nook, where he will be taking up a permanent contract. It certainly will not be the last we see of him, I’m sure, but for now, we wish him every success as he takes this next step in his career.

Rachel Fell will also be spending time at Moor Nook, on secondment, to strengthen teaching in Key Stage 1 whilst covering a maternity leave. Rachel spoke in her appraisal about wanting a new challenge, and this is a carefully planned opportunity for her development, whilst also supporting another school. Rach will return to St Georges throughout the academic year, fresh

Back here at St George’s, our staffing structure remains secure, familiar and strong.

Reception will remain the same, with Lisa Towers and Carol Glover teaching in Reception, supported by Jill Hession.

Class 3 will be taught by Allison Whittaker, who is returning to us. Allison is already familiar with St George’s, having previously covered Rachel’s maternity leave when Rachel had Olive. She knows the school, the curriculum and the staff, and she is lovely. Allison will be with us until Rachel returns from her secondment.

The rest of the class structure is as follows:

  • Class 4 – Chelsea Davenport
  • Class 5 – Ange Makepeace
  • Class 6 – Andrea Millar
  • Class 7 – Mark Holmes
  • Class 8 – Erin Leigh
  • Class 9 – Jenny Leap
  • Class 10 – Lydia Ainsworth
  • Class 11 – Thomas Norris
  • Class 12 – Georgina McVittie

We are also delighted to welcome Erin Leigh to Class 8. Erin is a very experienced senior teacher, who moved into supply work for family reasons and is now looking to return to a full-time permanent role. She comes highly recommended, and we are very fortunate to have her joining us.

We continue to send our love and prayers to Anne Foth, who we hope will be back with us, fully recovered, after the summer.

In terms of leadership, Nic Gregson returns from maternity leave as Head of School. Naz Harrison will strengthen leadership during my secondment, whilst also teaching, including Maths alongside Mark. Emma Smith, our SENCO, will continue to be with us and will teach, amongst other things, Maths and Spelling alongside Chelsea.

As for me, I will still be very much with you. I will be at St George’s a couple of days each week until Christmas, before gradually reducing my time at Moor Nook as Rob increases his presence there.

So yes, there are changes. But they are planned changes. Thoughtful changes. Doable changes. Changes that have come from people seeking opportunities, not from panic or reaction.

The important thing is this: the personnel may shift slightly, but the feel, culture and quality of St George’s remain exactly where they should be.

Strong. Familiar. Ambitious. And full of good people.

At the end of the service there will be bangers/sausages on a roll served along with drinks in the church hall.

I will collect the hymns, and will pass them onto church for you.

Quick Read - The Tip of the Iceberg

Tip of the Iceberg

A few things just beneath the surface this week:

The Chapel is open
Have you seen it yet? It is looking absolutely gorgeous and is already beginning to feel like a very special space in school. A huge thank you again to everyone who has helped make it possible.

Sports Day – Parent Zones
A polite but important reminder for Sports Day: please stay in the parent zone and keep well away from the running track. This helps us keep children safe and allows staff to organise events properly.
Also, please do not use the toilets at Albany — we are not able to use their facilities. If needed, please come back over to St George’s. Thank you for your understanding.

Classes for September
We will be emailing class information out to you next week. For most of the school, children will stay in their current groups of 15.

For Year 5 (current Y4), as they move from their groups of 15, we will be taking a little extra time to ensure classes are organised carefully and thoughtfully. We will be working with the children, listening to their views and requests, and taking these into account alongside our professional knowledge of what will work best for each child and for the year group as a whole.

As always, class allocations will be made with great care and consideration, with the aim of creating positive learning environments in which all children can thrive.

Summer Fair Raffle Tickets
Raffle tickets for the Summer Fair have come home today. Thank you in advance for your support — every ticket sold helps the PTFA continue to support school in brilliant ways.

Year 6 Debts
A gentle plea: please can any outstanding Year 6 debts be cleared as soon as possible. It really does help us close things down properly and fairly.

PGL and Bibby’s Farm Payments
A reminder that payments for PGL and Bibby’s Farm are also needed. Thank you for keeping these up to date — trips only work when the costs are covered.

SUMMER FAIR ------------It’s that time of year again, and, for me at least, it's landed pacey!

A lot of work, a lot of fun and a lot of funds raised!

In the run up to the Summer Fair (Monday 6th July) we have 3 non-uniform Fridays planned—19th June (alas, that's today!), 26th June and 3rd July. In return for the children coming in their own clothes we ask for contributions for the school fair.

For those of you new to the school, it runs like the Christmas Fair; we do not charge any money for the days, but ask if you would mind supplying us with bottles, clean re-useable, or new soft toys, books, games, chocolates, toiletries, or any prizes that can be used for the tombola stall.

There will be details shortly of how you can help both in the run up and on the evening itself.

The PTFA are great - to be honest I've worked with some wonderful PTFAs, including the current one. I remember fondly the 1st PTFA I worked with at St George's, very different to our current one, but equally lovely.

Some members of our current PTFA will be looking at leaving us after this Fair, so I really would welcome a fresh, new group of people who are willing to work with school to lead the PTFA. You can bring your own ideas, your own skill set and do it your way.... there's no need to follow in the footsteps of the current PTFA. So, if you're interested in finding out more, then come and meet the PTFA, in the new year, and help take it in your direction.

For now, please diary the Date of the Fair, and note the non uniforms that have come upon me quite quickly, the 1st one being err, today!

As we wrap up this week, here’s something to ponder:

I’d include it, but only as a gentle systems point, not an AirTag paragraph. The main conclusion should be gratitude, calm, trust, and partnership. Here’s a wrapped version:

As we close the week, I want to say a genuine thank you for the calm, trust and support you continue to show school.

The Reception trip to Blue Planet was a good example of this. The children had a wonderful day, but the return journey became much longer than planned after the coach broke down. These things are never ideal, but the children were safe, well cared for, and the systems we have in place worked as they should. Staff responded calmly, communication went out as quickly as possible once we had accurate information, and parents were superbly patient and supportive.

The day was longer than expected, but it showed what matters most: safe children, calm staff, clear communication, and parents who trusted us to manage the wobble.

Thank you. That partnership makes all the difference.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Andy

P.S. You may have noticed there was no newsletter last week. In 23 years of being a Headteacher, I think that’s the first one I’ve missed. I was gutted.

I’m sure you were devastated too… possibly inconsolable.

Normal service has now resumed.
