Before moving on with the celebrations of the week, I would like to pause to acknowledge some deeply sad news that has been felt across our whole school family.

Many of you will already know that our dear friend and governor, Si Newell, passed away peacefully on Sunday 28th June 2026.

Si was a truly remarkable man. Generous with his time, steadfast in his support and quietly devoted to the life of St George's, he served our school with great humility, compassion and wisdom. He believed wholeheartedly in our children, championed our staff and cared deeply about our wider community. His influence will continue to be felt for many years to come, and he will be so very dearly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our love, thoughts and prayers are especially with his beloved wife, Lisa, together with Freya and all of Si's family at this unimaginably difficult time. We hope they find strength in knowing just how deeply Si was respected, admired and loved by our school family.

Si's funeral service will take place at St George's Church, Chorley, on Wednesday 15th July at 1.30pm, before the committal at Charnock Richard Crematorium.

As we give thanks for Si's life, friendship and faithful service, we hold onto the Christian hope that has always been at the heart of our school.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Free School Meals – Who is Entitled?

Important Information for Families.

Firstly, if your child is already receiving Free School Meals and is in Years 3–11, there is nothing you need to do. The Local Authority already holds your information and will automatically check your child’s eligibility ahead of their return to school in September 2026.

If your child is in Key Stage 1 (Reception to Year 2), they will already have been receiving a free school meal through the universal infant scheme. If you have previously completed a Free School Meal application, so that your child’s school can access additional funding, your eligibility will also be automatically checked—so again, you do not need to take any action.

If your child has not been receiving a free school meal and you believe your they may be eligible please read the information below.

From September 2026, the Government is extending eligibility for Free School Meals. This means that more families may now qualify for support, even if they have not previously been eligible.

What this means for you

· If your household income is lower, your child may now be entitled to free school meals at school

· Schools receive additional funding (known as Pupil Premium) for every eligible child, which is used to support learning, resources and enrichment opportunities

· Even if your child prefers a packed lunch, applying can still bring valuable benefits to both your child and the school

What you need to do

· If you think you may now be eligible, we strongly encourage you to submit an application before the start of the academic year.

· Applications are quick, confidential and securely processed

· If your child is already receiving Free School Meals, you do not need to reapply

Why it’s important to apply

· Ensures your child receives all the support they are entitled to

· Helps the school access additional funding to support pupils

· May provide access to further support, such as help with trips or activities

Ukulele Performance- Thursday 9th July- C7 & C8

Parents and carers of children in C7 and C8 are warmly invited to join us for a celebration of your child's ukulele learning this year.

The performance will take place in our school hall. Please enter via the hall doors. Led by Mr Westall, the children will perform a selection of pieces they have been working hard to master throughout the year.

Music is a hugely important part of life at St George's. Whether our children are learning the ukulele, glockenspiel or recorder, or lifting the roof with their singing, we want every child to experience the joy, confidence and sense of achievement that music can bring.

There is something rather special about seeing children perform with such pride, and we know they will be delighted to share their learning with you.

The performance will run from 2.30pm until 3.00pm. At the end of the concert, you will have a chance to congratulate your child before they return briefly to class to collect their belongings. Children will then be dismissed at the usual time of 3.15pm from their normal collection point.
