Candlemass - News from the churches

Please enter an introduction for your news story here.
Candlemass is a special day in the Christian calendar that reminds us of the time when Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to the temple. This event, described in the Bible, shows us that Jesus was presented as a gift of light to the world, much like a candle brightening a dark room.
On Candlemass, which is celebrated on the 2nd of February, candles are blessed in churches. These candles are not just any candles – they symbolise hope, guidance, and the idea that light overcomes darkness. Think of it like the way Ted Lasso reminds us that a little positivity can brighten even the gloomiest day, or how a lighthouse guides ships safely home in a storm.
In this celebration, the candle becomes a powerful metaphor: just as a small flame can grow into a radiant light, a tiny spark of kindness and faith can spread hope and warmth to many. The tradition encourages us to carry this light in our hearts and share it with others.
This festival also teaches us that sometimes we might feel like we're surrounded by mumpigrubs moments – a bit low or troubled – but just as the candle is lit to chase away the dark, we too can bring light into our lives and the lives of those around us. It's a reminder that even when things seem turbid or challenging, there is always a way forward, shining like a rapier-like beam through the gloom.
As we learn about Candlemass, let us remember the words from Luke 2:32, “A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” In our own lives, we can be that light, spreading kindness, hope, and warmth to others every day.
Dear friends,
Today we remembered the baby Jesus being presented in the Temple, and reflected on how parents and grandparents can encourage children’s faith.
