Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

St George's and Yarrow Teaching School Alliance are lead players in Maths Hub 2. A national project aimed at raising standards in maths. Following extensive training, being involved with Government planning, and following a 2 way exchange visit to Shanghaii, we use a nationally commissioned scheme to help us teach maths - maths no problem. English, including Reading Schemes Used at School

English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils, therefore, who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.

English is central to all learning, and indeed to life. Children need to develop the capacity to use the English language in all it's forms. For more details on supporting you child at home in English (reading and writing) click here.

We are proud to teach phonics using the letters and sounds document, commissioned by the Government in 2007, which remains unsurpassed as a resource in how to teach phonics. Use the links below for more information on letters and sounds.

Our main school reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree, supplemented with Project X and other books to provide range and balance.

For Phonics we use Phonics Bug (which also has digital versions for your child to access at home), supplemented by Floppy’s Phonics, Dandelion Readers and others.


Our Vision

All that we believe at St George’s, including our vision for Science, is underpinned by our vision statement of ‘“Be determined and confident as God will be with you”, inspiring us to learn, care and share, through work, play and prayer’.

Science teaching and learning at St George’s Primary School should ignite in children, a curiosity and wonder of the world around them.  Our vision is underpinned by the belief that the science curriculum should foster a thirst for knowledge and create a learning environment whereby children are inspired and don’t want to stop. To achieve this, children are encouraged to ask their own questions that fuel exploration, developing their ideas in a way that enables them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation. Opportunity is given to work collaboratively with different peers and to explore concepts through discussion, allowing for the application and extension of scientific vocabulary as well as demonstrating and recording their learning in a variety of ways. Practical hands-on learning drives the Science curriculum and, where possible, outdoor space is utilised in order to embed learning and allow for application of skills and knowledge. In using technology to enhance learning, we hope to nurture and develop scientific minds for both now and for the future. We believe these opportunities will create confident, analytical and inquisitive learners for life.

Our high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create program, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Music – A Specialism of the School

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. The high-quality music education offered at St George’s engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. It increases their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. Pupils at the school, in addition to their class music will have the opportunity to learn any instrument through the Lancashire Music Service. In Year 4 the music teaching is based around learning the ukulele!

PE - A Specialism of the School

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Working with the Chorley School Sport Partnership, we provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.


A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. History at St George’s inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History at St George’s helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.


A high-quality geography education inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through the school, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.


Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Design Technology

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Modern Foreign Languages

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
